Recover seeks a qualified applicant for the full-time, year-round position of Lead Horticulturist. This is a dynamic role is responsible for, though not limited to, performing the following tasks:
- Responsible for site management of assigned accounts:
- Coordinate schedule of maintenance visits in collaboration with Horticulture Manager and clients.
- Collaborate with the Horticulture Manager and communicate to the crew regarding detailed information on what needs to be completed on each visit so as to efficiently execute tasks.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and address concerns regarding green roof systems, health of plants, and other site-specific challenges. Document progress and problems. Escalate “above-and-beyond” work required to Horticulture management.
- Track and manage account budgets and hours in conformance with contract requirements.
- Lead, oversee, and work alongside our horticulture crews in the hands-on installation, maintenance, and remediation of green roof accounts, incl. planting, weeding, pruning, adjusting/installing irrigation, fertilizing, controlling pests/diseases, and related work.
- When leading on jobsites, prioritize providing a high level of detail and horticulture expertise while completing tasks efficiently and maintaining best safety practices.
- Set pace for the crew and support their learning progress.
- Includes pre-visit loading/prep, onsite horticulture work, and post-visit clean-up, including unloading tools and materials required for the day’s work.
- Treat and/or delegate treatment plan for pests, diseases, etc. using organic plant management protocols.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair irrigation systems and adjust times based on change of seasons. Have an open line of communication with the irrigation team for larger repairs.
- Work independently or with a team on jobsites, as needed and appropriate.
- Help facilitate and lead weekly team meetings to communicate plans for the crew.
- Identify and address jobsite, departmental, and/or HR-related concerns.
- Contribute to and provide training to crews both on and off the jobsite. Help to develop horticulture best practices, safety training materials, and reference documents for new and existing staff.
- Support and coordinate with the Director of Horticulture, Horticulture Manager, Project Managers, and Site Supervisors.
- Clearly communicate with external parties, incl. clients, vendors, subcontractors, as needed.
- Off-site work includes occasional plant sourcing, material/plant pick-ups from nurseries, maintaining tools, and ensuring the shop is stocked and organized with necessary tools and equipment.
- Administrative work includes writing, delegating, and sending maintenance reports; creating/updating site manuals and plant healthcare documents; and researching/providing plant recommendations for assigned green roof accounts.
- Departmental work includes contributing to organizational improvements (e.g. system development), including researching and trialing new materials, products, plants, vendors, etc.
- Help maintain a clean and safe work environment on job sites, in the office/shop, and in Recover vehicles.
- Be a positive and professional ambassador and productive team member of Recover Green Roofs.
Minimum Qualifications

Horticultural – Must have at least 4 years of hands-on experience in horticulture or landscaping, specifically working with perennials, trees, and shrubs

Managerial - Must have at least 2 years of experience managing and/or leading crews

Irrigation – Hands-on experience with automated irrigation systems
- MCH or MCLP and degree in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Environmental Science, etc. preferred
- Experience working with New England's plant palettes and environments
- Knowledge of plant pathology and organic pest management
- Knowledge of plant growth habits, overwintering practices, soil/water/feeding needs, etc.
- Must be comfortable using or learning to use GSuite, Excel, and/or other technological platforms
- Must be reliable with a strong ability to both take direction and work independently
- Must have excellent powers of communication and critical thinking skills
- Must have an innate attention-to-detail and the ability to self-pace
- Must have good references that can attest to your work ethic
- Valid driver’s license with comfort driving and parking in Boston
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Must be comfortable working on roofs under adverse weather conditions (sun, heat, wind, rain)
- Must be comfortable handling and climbing all types of ladders
- Routine and/or frequent lifting of loads up to or greater than 50-75 lbs
- Occasional non-routine overnight travel based on business needs
