Public Works Maintenance Worker
The City of Wyoming is accepting applications for the position of full time Maintenance Worker in our Public Works Department. A maintenance worker performs various diverse unskilled and skilled tasks related to streets, storm sewers, watermains, City parks and grounds, and urban canopy, and City services such as snow and ice control, leaf collection, etc. The department serves a community of approximately 8,400 residents.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- General road and right of way maintenance including, but not limited to, litter removal, blacktopping and asphalt work, and tree and vegetation work.
- Storm sewer repair and installation, gutter, culvert, and catch basin cleaning.
- Load and unload stone, gravel, dirt, salt, asphalt, timber, using backhoe, bobcat, and other heavy and light equipment.
- Make and install street signs.
- Perform routine maintenance and light construction, drywalling, and painting as needed.
- Performs all aspects of concrete worrk - form, pour, and finish.
- Maintain City owned grounds, including grass cutting, landscaping, and other improvements as required.
- Maintain, drag, and line athletic fields.
- Operate and maintain dump trucks, salt spreaders, snowplows, lawn mowers, and other equipment used in performance of work.
- As part of a crew, perform spring and fall curbside leaf collection.
- Perform water main and fire hydrant repair/replacement work.
- Snow plowing, salting, and treating roads.
- Installation and maintenance of the City’s urban canopy.
- Perform daily inspection and maintenance checks on vehicles and machinery/equipment used.
- Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Have knowledge of the safe use of and skills and ability to use a variety of gas and electric powered tools, equipment, and common hand tools.
- Have the ability and willingness to perform heavy physical labor for extended periods of time under all weather conditions.
- Be available for snow, ice, water main breaks, removal of felled trees, storm debris removal/clean up, and other emergencies outside of the normal workday/week as needed or assigned and ability to maintain home or mobile telephone service for notification of emergency duty.
- Be willing and able to move around the job site and from one job site to another; to lift and carry or move up to 50 lbs. such as bags of Sakrete concrete mix, load and unload them from a truck bed and carry or move them to an excavation site which may be inside a trench or other excavation; to move a water valve that can be 50+ pounds around on a water main in a trench while straddling an existing pipe, etc.; to respond quickly to sounds to avoid an unsafe situation like a sudden failure of a tree; to move safely on uneven, steep and/or irregular terrain while working on things such as in and around excavations on underground water mains; to wear personal protective gear for an extended period of times as needed such as safety glasses, gloves, hard hats and chaps when using chainsaws, etc.; to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs during routine operations; to climb in and out of large dump trucks on a daily basis; possess the ability to stoop, squat, kneel, twist, or position self as such to perform job related tasks as outlined above; ability to remain in a stationary position for hours including during snow removal and mowing grass; to position one-self to work safely in spaces including confined and awkward spaces such as trenches, pits, etc.; to perform night work and to work in an environment that is sometimes noisy and dusty.
- Have the ability to read, write, and take and follow directions, ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Regular and punctual attendance required.
- Successful candidate subject to pre-employment background screening and drug screening and subject to random drug and alcohol testing as required by the terms of possessing a CDL.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
- Valid State driver’s license maintained throughout course of employment with the City.
- Possess or obtain a minimum of a Class B Commercial Driver’s license with airbrake endorsement within one year of hire and retain it throughout the course of employment with the City.
- Eligible for employment in the U.S.
- Must be willing and able to respond to call outs and emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Prior experience with landscaping or construction and working with the public is preferred.
Job Benefits
Hourly pay range $23.60 to $32.55 depending on years of experience, certification, skills, and qualifications. The City picks up the employees’ 10% required contribution to Ohio Public Employees’ Retirement Pension. Current benefits as defined in the 2024-2026 AFSCME contract and City Personnel Ordinance include health insurance; voluntary dental and vision insurance; City provided life insurance of 1x annual base pay; supplemental critical illness, accident, voluntary life, legal, and identity theft insurances available; twelve paid holidays per year; paid vacation leave; four paid personal leave days per year; paid bereavement leave as defined in the contract; ten hours of sick pay earned per month with conversion to vacation ability and conversion to cash ability at retirement; longevity pay upon evidence of merit annually after completion of defined years of service; tuition reimbursement; Ohio Public Employee Pension Plan with City pick up of employee’s required 10% contribution; uniforms and boots; wellness program; Employee Assistance Program; participation in Deferred Compensation Plan; Recreation Center and Aquatic Center memberships; and ability to receive additional hourly pay for acquiring and retaining certifications as outlined in the current AFSCME contract.
